# Mandatory Password Change on First Client Login - Implementation Summary

**Status**: ✅ COMPLETE

**Date Implemented**: September 1, 2026

---

## Overview

Implemented mandatory password change functionality for client portal. When a client logs in for the first time with their IC number as the password, they are forced to change their password before accessing the rest of the portal.

---

## Components Implemented

### 1. Database Migration
- **File**: `database/migrations/2026_09_01_141422_add_password_changed_to_users.php`
- **Changes**: Added `password_changed_at` timestamp column to `users` table
- **Status**: ✅ Executed successfully
- **SQL**: `$table->timestamp('password_changed_at')->nullable()->after('password');`

### 2. Middleware
- **File**: `app/Http/Middleware/CheckPasswordChanged.php`
- **Purpose**: Intercepts all client portal requests to check if password has been changed
- **Logic**:
  - Only applies to `client` role
  - If `password_changed_at` is NULL, redirect to password change page
  - Doesn't redirect if already on password change page (prevents infinite loop)
- **Applied To**: All client routes via middleware array

### 3. Controller Methods
- **File**: `app/Http/Controllers/ClientController.php`
- **Methods Added**:
  - `showChangePassword()` - Display password change form
  - `updatePassword(Request $request)` - Handle password update

- **Features**:
  - Validates current password matches
  - Enforces strong password requirements:
    - Minimum 8 characters
    - At least one uppercase letter
    - At least one lowercase letter
    - At least one digit
  - Updates `password_changed_at` timestamp on successful change
  - Sets `password_changed_at` to current time so middleware doesn't redirect anymore

### 4. Routes
- **File**: `routes/web.php`
- **Routes Added** (in client prefix group):
  ```php
  Route::get('/change-password', [ClientController::class, 'showChangePassword'])->name('client.change-password');
  Route::post('/change-password', [ClientController::class, 'updatePassword'])->name('client.update-password');
  ```
- **Middleware Applied**: Added `CheckPasswordChanged::class` to client routes group

### 5. UI View
- **File**: `resources/views/client/change-password.blade.php`
- **Features**:
  - Beautiful, responsive design matching portal theme
  - Shows yellow warning alert if first login
  - Password strength indicators
  - Password visibility toggle buttons
  - Current password validation
  - New password confirmation field
  - Password requirements list (8 chars, uppercase, lowercase, numbers)
  - Error messages for validation failures
  - Success redirect to dashboard after password change

### 6. User Model Updates
- **File**: `app/Models/User.php`
- **Changes**:
  - Added `password_changed_at` to `$fillable` array
  - Added `password_changed_at` to `casts` array with `datetime` type

## User Flow

### First-Time Login (Client with IC Number Password)
1. Client logs in with email and IC number
2. Authentication succeeds
3. Middleware checks `password_changed_at`
4. Since it's NULL (first time), redirects to `/client/change-password`
5. Shows warning: "For your security, please change your password on first login."
6. Client enters:
   - Current password (IC number)
   - New strong password
   - Confirm new password
7. System validates:
   - Current password matches
   - New password meets requirements
   - Passwords match
8. On success:
   - Password is updated with hash
   - `password_changed_at` is set to current timestamp
   - User redirected to dashboard
   - Middleware no longer intercepts future requests

### Subsequent Logins
- Client logs in with email and new password
- `password_changed_at` is not NULL
- Middleware allows access to all portal pages
- No interruption

## Implementation Details

### Password Validation Rules
```php
'password' => [
    'required',
    'string',
    'min:8',
    'regex:/[A-Z]/',  // At least one uppercase letter
    'regex:/[a-z]/',  // At least one lowercase letter
    'regex:/[0-9]/',  // At least one digit
    'confirmed',
]
```

### Password Hashing
Uses Laravel's `Hash::make()` with default bcrypt algorithm (cost factor 10)

### Middleware Logic
```php
if (auth()->check() && auth()->user()->role === 'client') {
    if (is_null(auth()->user()->password_changed_at)) {
        if (!$request->is('client/change-password*')) {
            return redirect()->route('client.change-password');
        }
    }
}
```

## Security Considerations

✅ **Strong Password Enforcement**: Requires mix of uppercase, lowercase, and digits
✅ **Current Password Verification**: Must provide current password to change new one
✅ **Secure Hashing**: Uses bcrypt with Laravel's Hash facade
✅ **CSRF Protection**: Form includes @csrf token
✅ **Middleware Protection**: All client routes protected by middleware
✅ **Infinite Loop Prevention**: Middleware doesn't redirect if already on change page
✅ **Error Handling**: Specific error messages for validation failures

## Testing Checklist

- [x] Migration runs successfully
- [x] Middleware has no syntax errors
- [x] Controller methods have no syntax errors
- [x] Routes are registered correctly
- [x] User model changes are valid
- [x] View renders without errors

## Next Steps for Testing

1. **Manual Testing on Local/Dev**:
   - Create a new client with IC number as password
   - Log in as that client
   - Verify redirected to change password page
   - Try invalid passwords (should show error messages)
   - Change password successfully
   - Log out and log in with new password
   - Verify no redirect on subsequent logins

2. **Live Server**:
   - Run migration: `php artisan migrate`
   - Test new client signup
   - Test existing client login (should not be affected)
   - Monitor logs for errors

## Troubleshooting

**Q: Client not redirected to change password page on first login?**
- A: Check that middleware is registered in routes. Verify `password_changed_at` is NULL in database for that user.

**Q: Infinite redirect loop?**
- A: Middleware checks `if (!$request->is('client/change-password*'))` before redirecting. This prevents loops.

**Q: Password validation always fails?**
- A: Check regex patterns in validation. Must include uppercase, lowercase, and at least one digit.

**Q: Password change successful but still redirected on next login?**
- A: Verify `password_changed_at` timestamp was set in database. Check if user session is cached.

## Related Issues Resolved

- ✅ Task 16: Implement Mandatory Password Change on First Client Login
- Previously clients logged in with IC number, no enforcement to change it
- Now mandatory change on first login for security

---

## Notes

- This implementation only applies to **client** role
- Existing clients' `password_changed_at` will remain NULL initially (can be backfilled if needed)
- Can be extended to other roles (staff, lawyer, agent) if needed in future
- Password change can be done voluntarily anytime via `/client/change-password` route
